St. Lawrence Ruiz was married, and he had two sons and a daughter.  He was educated by the Dominicans.  St. Lawrence served as the clerk-sacristan and altar server at the church of Binondo.  He worked as a calligrapher.  In 1626, he was accused of a crime.  He fled to Japan on ship.  Upon arriving in Japan, he was taken into custody because he was a catholic.  He was tortured, but he would not deny Jesus.  St. Lawrence was hung by his feet over a pit.  Due to blood loss and suffocation, he died on September 27, 1637.  St. Lawrence was canonized by Saint Pope John Paul II on October 18, 1987.  He is the first Filipino saint and martyr.
