St. Vincent de Paul was born in Gascony in 1581. He was schooled by Franciscan Friars. His progress was so great that after four years, a gentleman hired him to teach his children, thereby not a burden to his poor parents. He was ordained a priest in 1600 after his studies at the University of Toulouse. In 1605, he fell into the hands of African pirates on a voyage from Marseilles to Narbonne. He was sold as a slave to Tunis and Divine Providence effected his escape after two years. He returned to France, and in 1617 he began to preach missions. In 1625 he founded the Congregation of the Lazarists. His charity was his predominant virtue. The Sisters of Charity owe the foundation of their congregation to St. Vincent. He remained humble, though he was honored by the great ones of the world. He died September 27 in Paris at age 80.
