St. Finbar was born to a lady of the Irish royal court in the latter part of the 16th century. Lochan was his baptismal name, but his educators named him Fionbarr (whitehead) because of his light hair. It is said that he visited St. David in Pembrokeshire in southern Wales and accompanied him to Rome. Pope St. Gregory, wanted to make him a bishop, but he had vision in which God said that he wanted that honor himself. After preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland and founding a number of churches, he went to live as a hermit on a small island in Gouganebarra. He founded a monastery later at Lough Eire called Corcaghmer from which Cork is derived. Candidates flocked to its school, and its influence extended over the whole of southern Ireland. The great city of Cork arose out of the desert, and Finbar is regarded as its founder and first Bishop. He died about 633.
