This feast began in Spain in 1513.  It extended to all of Spain and the Kingdom of Naples by 1671.  In 1683, the king of Poland, John Sobieski, while fighting the Muslim armies under Mohammed IV in Constantinople, entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  His army defeated the Muslims.  Pope Innocnet XI proclaimed the feast to the whole church.
