Born in Cremona, Italy in 1502. His father died when Anthony was quite young. His mother had him educated and taught him to be compassionate toward the poor and afflicted. After studying medicine in Padua, he became a doctor and returned to his home town. At age 22, he decided that his vocation was the priesthood so he could heal souls as well as bodies. He was ordained in 1528 and went to Milan. There he had more opportunities to serve his fellowman. He joined the Confraternity of Eternal Wisdom. Their purpose was to do various works of mercy. With the help of Luigia Torelli, Countess of Guastella, he founded a community called the Angelicals. Their goal was to rescue fallen women and girls and those in danger of falling into sin. In 1530 he founded the Order of Clerks Regular of St. Paul. He and two other zealous priests strove to revive the love of Divine Worship. This they did by preaching and the administration of the Sacraments. When Milan was stricken with wars and the plague, they ministered to were stricken. He died in 1539 at age 37, worn out by his many labor.
